Workshop Outline

Counselling professionals are increasingly seeking training in preparation for working
with gender variant/trans clients. Madison-Amy Webb (a woman from a gender variant history) invites you to consider a simple truth: everyone has a gender identity, whether or not they’ve given it consideration.

This training day will invite you to begin exploring your own gender identity through a series of experiential and reflective exercises such as, “The Dressing Up Box” and What kind of Man/ Woman are you?” as well as “Personal meaning” which will allow you to develop a deeper personal understanding. As counsellors and psychotherapists, we can then begin to relate to our clients in new and productive ways, thus gaining a more nuanced understanding of the issues faced by clients and their own identity. The day will also include group work, discussions, and phenomenological journaling.

The day will also explore the social impact of a lack of gender variance within our cultural ancestry; how the popular conception of gender identity came into being by looking at the social and historical influences at play and the need to embrace a form of Genderism. We will also look at clinical techniques which offer new ways to connect with gender variant clients effectively. This is an essential training for any counselling professional, those working with gender variant clients, and those interested in gender matters.
