Workshop Outline

Counselling professionals are increasingly seeking training in preparation for working
with gender variant/trans clients. Mason-Atticus Webb (currently identifying as Gender-Fluid) invites you to consider a simple truth: everyone has a gender identity, whether or not they’ve given it consideration. Mason considers how their own on-going process highlights the complexities around gender variance – not just for our clients but for us as therapists also.

This training session will involve a level of experiential examination, so that we as practitioners can remove an “Us & Them” situation between the unchallengeable Gender Binary and Gender Variance. It will invite you to begin exploring gender identity through experiential discussions and reflective exercises such as, “The Dressing Up Box” and What kind of Man/ Woman are you?” as well as “Personal meaning” which will allow you to develop a deeper personal understanding around your gender identity. As counsellors and psychotherapists, we can then begin to relate to our clients in new and productive ways, thus gaining a more nuanced understanding of the issues faced by clients and their own identity.

The day will also explore the social impact of a lack of gender variance within our cultural ancestry; how the popular conception of gender identity came into being by looking at the social and historical influences at play and the need to embrace a form of Genderism. We will also look at clinical techniques which offer new ways to connect with gender variant clients effectively. This is an essential training for any counselling professional, those working with gender variant clients, and those interested in gender matters.

About Mason

Mason-Atticus Webb (MBACP Accred.) currently identifies as Gender-Fluid. They spent nearly 10 years over the gender border and living full time as female following a medical transition. However, even with ongoing therapy and a medicalised transition, the gender dysphoria returned and self-examination determined that rather than an “either/or” existence a more authentic life was one which allowed a certain amount of gender flexibility and was what was more appropriate for them. Mason is a practicing psychotherapist and supervisor who also trains other mental health professionals on how to support trans people. They live in Peterborough, UK and is a WPATH Member (World Professional Association for Transgender Health). This training day takes some key themes from their book A Reflective Guide to Gender Identity Counselling (May 2019, Jessica Kingsley Publishing) – attendees will be able to purchase this book with a 10% on-line discount made available to them on the day of the workshop.
