In life there are many repetitive tasks, things we have no choice but to do, on repeat over and over. For example, a school run, cooking meals, going to work, etc!
Some of these things I have no control over, but I can control the way I am experiencing them. When life is intense, we can make choices starting with the small things around us. Whilst I may not have much time or money to factor in new and exciting experiences during my everyday life, I can incorporate small changes to the everyday.
New experiences can boost our wellbeing, this doesn’t need to be costly! For example, it could be as simple as driving a different route on your way to work or school pick up. It could be cooking with a different pasta shape, experiencing the change in texture and appearance of your meal. Using a shampoo and conditioner you haven’t tried before, taking in an unfamiliar scent. Trying a new coffee or tea, is a refreshing experience. Moving your furniture around, this change in your environment can be inspiring and uplift your mood – leading to increased overall well-being. Have you ever noticed that when you are trying to sort through old belongings or toys the children suddenly become interested and start playing for a while, appearing content and occupied – this is because they are experiencing a change in their environment.
Differences are what makes life interesting, and variety can spark interest and curiosity. Making a conscious effort to go out of your comfort zone and speak with someone new or unfamiliar in day-to-day life, this can bring about positive change and allow you to learn about and appreciate differences.
Taking time to consider what I am reading and how this is making me feel, for example it may not be beneficial for me to read too many sad news stories and instead filling that 10 minutes of reading space with something edifying and refreshing will be a much better mood enhancing experience.
If you find you have more time you could learn to cook a new cuisine. Take a walk in a new environment, I recommend looking at areas around the London Loop. ‘EnBro’ based in the Bromley borough offers a walking group – a great way to keep fit and meet new people at the same time.
Set some personal goals to plan how you will factor in making some changes to enhance your wellbeing by incorporating new experiences into everyday life. Make plans! Small plans, medium plans and big plans!
These small differences and changes can enhance the way we experience life! The aim is to boost your mood and reduce stress. It’s the small changes that really can make a difference.
